WORSHIP NOTES
Volume 9, No. 10  (October 2014)


In this new series we will look at facets of worship that are displayed in Israel’s hymnbook, the Psalms. While not exhaustive studies of each Psalm, of course, we will highlight one perspective on worship that can be seen in each.

WORSHIP IS . . .

(Psalm 1)   . . . the blessing of relating rightly to the Lord.
(Psalm 2)   . . . rejoicing—with trembling! (v. 11) (read my article on this wonderful truth HERE)
(Psalm 3)   . . . resting in God’s sustaining, protecting grace.
(Psalm 4)   . . . calling on the Lord (vv. 1, 3).
(Psalm 5)   . . . a grateful response to God for His faithfulness and protection (vv. 11-12).
(Psalm 6)   . . . turning our eyes to God in times of trial.
(Psalm 7)   . . . a refuge from the storms of life (v.1), and a grateful response to God’s character (v. 17)
(Psalm 8)   . . . an awestruck wonder at His creative work. (who He is)
(Psalm 9)   . . . a grateful response to His past deeds (what He has done), and a corresponding hope for His future work.
(Psalm 10) . . . a turning to God in times of suffering.
(Psalm 11) . . . a settled confidence in the Lord’s power and His ways.
(Psalm 12) . . . crying out to God in the face of evil.
(Psalm 13) . . . finding hope in God in the face of hopeless circumstances.
(Psalm 14) . . . a rejection of all other ways.
(Psalm 15) . . . only possible to redeemed people.
(Psalm 16) . . . an expression of confidence in and allegiance to God.
(Psalm 17) . . . taking confident repose under the shadow of His wings.
(Psalm 18) . . . heaping praise upon our faithful God of deliverance and safety.
(Psalm 19) . . . praising God for His creation and His Word, and looking to Him for guidance and strength for living.
(Psalm 20) . . . expressing trust in the power and faithfulness of God.
(Psalm 21) . . . rejoicing in the Lord’s blessings and comforts.
(Psalm 22) . . . turning to God in times of trial, and joyfully celebrating His deliverance.
(Psalm 23) . . . resting in the Shepherd of our souls.
(Psalm 24) . . . looking to the Lord of glory and grace.
(Psalm 25) . . . an appeal to God for His mercy and His sanctifying work.
(Psalm 26) . . . a cry to God for vindication in the midst of an evil generation.
(Psalm 27) . . . a joyful confidence in and deep yearning for the Lord.
(Psalm 28)  . . . a grateful response to God for His protection and deliverance.
(Psalm 29) . . . recognizing and declaring God’s glory and worth.
(Psalm 30) . . . gratefully acknowledging His sovereign working and deliverance.
